Cider Press Poetry Contest

September 30, 2011 Leave a comment

If you are interested in poetry contests there are a lot of them out there.  I don’t usually publicize contests, but one that caught my eye is the Cider Press Review CPR Book Award.  The final judge for the contest is Jeanne Marie Beaumont.  I am something of a fan of Ms. Beaumont’s work, so the chance to be selected by her as a winner seems very appealing.

If you have enough poems to make up 48 pages, you might consider entering the contest.

I will probably not enter because I will probably publish my own work, eventually.  Yet external validation is a very pleasant thing, isn’t it?

Simon’s latest 5 poems are up at Eye On Life Online Magazine as of NOW.  This is exceptional stuff.  I hope you will stop by and have a look.

Later in the week we will be posting more brand new, original poetry.  I’ll keep you informed 🙂

As for myself I’ve been dabbling at this and that – a little short fiction that you won’t see, etc.

I am pretty excited about the poetry I’ll be publishing at The Poetry Locksmith this week.  Simon Perchik has sent us five more poems and they are fantastic.  Also we have some brand new poets publishing for the first time.  Follow me on Twitter to keep abreast of the great stuff going up at Eye On Life.

Wakened from a dream
My back against warm brick
A private jet ascending
Steeply the sky stairway
Without me

Later whining wheels
Streamlined lithe
Shining stainless steel
Train streaking

Roaring on asphalt
Expressway wheels
Somewhere bound
At speed
As I sit

At the center
Of my universe
Chaos slowed to order
I lean back
And retrieve my dream

Dreams of Sun and Water

September 7, 2011 Leave a comment

Weather turns like a mood
Smiling sun to tearful rain
Warm to chill

The flower turns its head
Following the sun
Furled in falling rain
A closed promise

Fat beads of water
Cling to blades of grass
Cool and wet between your toes
Tears of morning

Sunrise in orange haze
A citrus sky
Water heavy in the air
Weight on the heart

Glad clear day
Bees thronging in the blooms
Crickets remembering loudly
Their sleep

Inside, I am changed
I am wet
I have a new name

Washing over me
There is taken and given
And I am changed again

Above I have a new name
Below, beside, without, renamed
Though never truly without
For you are always there
Even in the air

My identity determined by proximity
To you

Giver and sustainer
Taker and slayer
Life lives in you as you in it

The illusion of our separateness:
You are most of me

I feel you on the surface
And beneath
Cool or warm
Sometimes inviting
Sometimes not

Always in motion, changing

I am always here except
For the part you’ve taken
Sifted in your currents
Worn as a skin

Sculpted by your ins and outs
These coves and beaches
Myriad stones
Shells of creatures
Your gifts like scars
I wear with savage pride
Rocked like an infant
In the cradle of your tide
